Understand the key specs for camping: light output, beam distance, battery life and weight — and why no single figure is a universal rule.

When shopping for a head torch, it's important to understand what each specification means. Whether you're setting up camp or navigating through the night, knowing what a figure actually describes matters more than chasing the biggest number on the listing.
Light output is measured in lumens. A higher figure means the LED is putting out more total light, but that says nothing on its own about how far the beam actually reaches or how long the battery lasts at that setting — a torch can quote a high peak lumen figure that's only sustainable for a few minutes before it steps down.
Beam distance describes how far the light is claimed to remain useable, in metres. A longer distance matters more for scanning a wide area or picking a path over rough ground than it does for close-up tasks around the tent, like cooking or reading. Manufacturers measure this differently from each other, so it's a rough guide rather than a precise, comparable figure.
Battery life tells you how long the torch runs before needing a recharge or new batteries. It's usually quoted at the lowest brightness setting, since that's where a torch lasts longest — the same torch on its brightest setting will run for a fraction of that time. Check which mode a quoted run time refers to before comparing two listings.
Lighter head torches are generally more comfortable for extended wear, but weight savings often come from a smaller battery or fewer brightness modes rather than cleverer engineering. A heavier torch isn't automatically worse — it may simply be trading comfort for a longer runtime or a brighter maximum output.

We research and write these explainers from published standards, manufacturer specifications and verified customer feedback on Amazon UK — not from hands-on testing, which we do not claim to have done. Where a figure comes from a test standard we name the standard; where it is a rule of thumb, we say so. Corrections are welcome via the contact page.
