Best Camping Tents for Families
How to size a family tent honestly, what hydrostatic head actually needs to be in the UK, and which tents on Amazon UK fit.
Last updated 1 August 2026 · Written by the TrailHaven editorial team
Family tents are the category where the number on the box is least useful. A '4-person' tent means four sleeping mats edge to edge, with nowhere for bags, boots or a toddler who has decided that 5am is morning.
The tents below come from what we track on Amazon UK. The guidance is about how to read the specifications — which is the part that actually prevents a bad weekend.

What to look for
Size up by at least one person
A family of four is far happier in a 5- or 6-person tent. Capacity ratings describe how many bodies physically fit, not how many can live there for a weekend.
Hydrostatic head: 3,000 mm and taped seams
1,500 mm handles typical UK summer rain. For spring, autumn or anywhere exposed, 3,000 mm or higher with taped seams is the sensible floor — and seams matter as much as the headline number.
Pitching time is worth paying for
Air-beam and pop-up tents cost more and weigh more, but going up in minutes matters a great deal when you arrive in the dark in the rain with tired children. Pole tents are cheaper, lighter and easier to repair.
Check the packed size against your boot
Large family tents defeat small cars. The packed dimensions are published for a reason and are easy to overlook until the day of the trip.
Pitch it in the garden once before you go. A missing pole is a minor annoyance at home and a ruined weekend on a campsite at dusk.
How we chose
Picks are drawn from the camping tents we track on Amazon UK, selected by the rule described under each heading above — not a fixed list of products, so a pick can never quietly point at something out of stock. Where we say a product is well-reviewed, that reflects verified Amazon customer ratings and review counts, not in-house testing we haven't done. Prices and availability are refreshed at build time; see the price accuracy page for how recently.
