Under £50 you are buying a day pack, and that is not a compromise for most walking in the UK — a pack for a day on the hills with waterproofs, food, water and a spare layer is a genuinely simple object. What the money does not buy is a load-carrying suspension system, and that only matters once the pack is heavy.

What to look for
Capacity is quoted in litres — buy for the walk you do
The litre figure is the volume of the main compartment and its pockets, not a difficulty rating. A pack sized for a day walk holds waterproofs, food, water and a layer; carrying sleeping kit needs a noticeably larger one. Going bigger than the trip is not free either: space that exists tends to get filled.
The hip belt is where budget packs differ most
A load-carrying belt is padded, wraps the hips and takes weight off the shoulders. Under £50 it is often plain webbing, which stops the pack swinging but transfers nothing. For light day loads that is fine. For anything heavy, it is the single thing you are giving up.
Water-resistant is not waterproof
Pack fabrics shed a shower; the seams, zips and the seam where the shoulder straps join do not. Some packs include a rain cover, which handles the fabric but not the opening. The reliable answer in British weather is a liner or dry bags inside the pack, whatever the listing claims.
Fit is back length, not your height
Packs are sized by the length of your back, and some are one-size while others come in a shorter or women's-specific version. A pack that sits too long pushes the belt onto the hip bones instead of around them. Load it before the first real walk — an empty pack in a hallway tells you almost nothing.
Read the reviews for hardware, not stars
The fabric usually outlives everything attached to it, so the useful reviews are the ones mentioning zips, buckles and stitching after a season of use. A high average rating from a mostly-unused product is the least informative number on the page.
Spend what is left over on a liner and a proper water bottle rather than on a bigger pack. Both do more for a wet day out than the extra litres would.
