When choosing a hiking backpack, it's easy to get lost in the terminology. Manufacturers use specific terms to describe their packs, but these often don't immediately translate into how the pack will perform or suit your needs. Back Length: Not Your Height
The term 'back length' or 'torso length' refers to the measurement taken from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the level of your top hips. This is an independent measure of your overall height. It dictates how closely a pack fits your frame, and it's crucial for comfort and weight distribution. A longer back length accommodates a larger torso, while a shorter one provides a more streamlined fit.

A well-designed hiking pack relies on shifting the weight from your shoulders to your hips.
