Find the best fishing tackle for your next session – from line and hooks to weights and leaders, our guide helps you make informed choices.

Last updated 6 September 2026 · Written by the TrailHaven editorial team

Fishing tackle is a surprisingly diverse category. It covers everything needed to get out on the water or into a quiet stream, from the fundamental elements of line and hooks to more specialised tools for different techniques and environments. Selecting the right components can significantly impact your success, but it doesn't necessarily require a huge investment.

A core principle in fishing is considering what you're actually trying to achieve. Are you targeting smaller species in calmer conditions, or aiming for larger fish in more challenging waters? The type of tackle you choose should align with these factors and the prevailing conditions.

What to look for

Line Strength and Type

The strength of your fishing line is crucial, but it's not solely determined by the stated breaking strain. Consider the weight of the hooks and swivels you'll be using, as well as the likely size of the fish you intend to catch. Different types – monofilament, braid, fluorocarbon – have different properties affecting casting distance, sensitivity, and visibility underwater. Choosing a line that's too weak will lead to frustrating lost catches; one that's overly strong can make precise presentation difficult.

Hook Size and Barb Configuration

Hooks come in a vast range of sizes, each designed for specific prey species. Selecting the correct hook size is paramount – too small and the fish will escape; too large and it may be unsuitable for the bait or presentation. Equally important is barb configuration, with barbless hooks offering significantly easier removal for both you and the fish, reducing stress on the catch.

Leader Material & Length

The leader – the section of line connecting your main line to your hook – plays a critical role in presentation. Fluorocarbon is often favoured for its low visibility underwater, while monofilament offers greater strength. The length should be appropriate for the prevailing conditions; shorter leaders are better for clear water and close casting, while longer leaders can offer more subtle presentations.

Weight Selection & Casting Distance

Weights aren't just about adding weight to your line. They influence how far you can cast, particularly in windy conditions. Consider the water depth and current when selecting weights – heavier weights are needed for deeper water or strong currents to maintain momentum.

Remember that fishing tackle is an investment. Start with a solid foundation and gradually expand your kit as your experience and preferences develop.

How we chose

Picks are drawn from the fishing tackle we track on Amazon UK, selected by the rule described under each heading above — not a fixed list of products, so a pick can never quietly point at something out of stock. Where we say a product is well-reviewed, that reflects verified Amazon customer ratings and review counts, not in-house testing we haven't done. Prices and availability are refreshed at build time; see the price accuracy page for how recently.
