What to look for
VLT: how much light the lens lets through
Visible light transmission is given as a percentage — the share of light that reaches your eye through the lens. A lower percentage is a darker lens. That is the whole of what the number tells you: which percentage suits which day is a judgement, and any figure presented here as a rule would be invented.
Flat light is the difficult condition, not sun
In bright sun almost any dark lens works. The hard case is overcast, snowing, late-afternoon light, where the snow surface loses definition — and a dark lens makes that worse. Lenses sold for low light are tinted to raise contrast rather than to cut brightness. No single lens covers both ends, which is why interchangeable-lens sets and photochromic lenses exist.
Fogging is about warm damp air, not lens quality
Goggles fog when warm moist air meets a cold lens. Three things are built to prevent it: a double lens with a sealed air gap between the two layers, so the inner one stays closer to your face temperature; vents in the frame; and an anti-fog coating inside. Two things defeat all of them — a neck tube pulled over your nose, which vents your breath straight into the goggle, and a lens wiped on the inside, which removes the coating.
Fit is against the helmet you own
Goggles and helmet are one system. The frame should sit against the helmet's brim without a gap of forehead between them, the strap goes over the helmet outside rather than under it, and the clip at the back holds it there. A frame that fits your face perfectly and leaves a gap under your helmet is the wrong frame for that helmet.
Frame size, face shape and field of view
Frames are sold in sizes and shapes, including small fits and models with cut-outs to clear spectacle arms. Lens geometry is described as cylindrical (curved side to side, flat vertically), spherical (curved both ways) or toric (curved both ways to different radii). Those affect the shape of the peripheral view and the price; the fit against your face and helmet decides more.

- Putting them away damp at the end of the day, so the foam and the inner lens are still wet the next morning.
- Carrying goggles pushed up on the helmet in a lift queue, so they collect snow and warm air and then go back onto a cold face.
