Buying guide
Moulded hard plastic is the standard: rigid, hard-wearing, and bulky to store. A wooden sledge with metal runners is heavier and traditional, and it is the type that needs the most snow underneath it. Inflatable rings and tubes are light and pack away to nothing. Foam boards and slide sheets are the cheapest and give the least control.
Narrow runners concentrate the weight along two lines, so they cut down into soft snow and track straight on it. A flat pan spreads the weight over a wide area, so it sits on top of loose snow and slides best where the surface is already packed. This is why the same sledge behaves like two different products on fresh snow and on a well-used run.
A plain pan, a tube or a foam sheet has no mechanism to change direction. Some sledges add a steering bar or steering ropes and hand-operated brakes that dig into the snow. Whether a sledge has either of these is on the listing and is worth reading before assuming, because the two designs are used quite differently.
Sledges are sold as single seats and as two-seaters, and manufacturers state a maximum load. If an adult intends to ride with a child, that stated figure — not the number of seats — is the thing to check. Adults also need to look at the internal length, since a sledge sized for a child leaves nowhere to put your legs.
UK snow is occasional, and a rigid plastic or wooden sledge takes up the same garage, shed or car-boot space all year whether or not it snows. Inflatable and foldable designs cost nothing to store and need pumping up or assembling on the day. For most households this is the practical trade, and it is the one nobody considers while it is snowing.
Most of the time spent sledging is spent walking uphill with the sledge, usually while carrying a child's gloves. A tow rope, a handle and low weight matter for that half of the activity, which is not the half the listing photo shows.
